Nationwide Primaries---Bad Idea---Unless You're a Fat Cat

People gripe all the time about the Iowa and New Hampshire and other small state's primaries having so much influence on the nation's choice of presidential candidates.
Well, apparently, there's a new poll from the New York Time and CBS News claiming that a majority of Americans want a national primary. Of course the only way to accomplish this would be through federal legislation, which would violate the 10th Amendment. Regardless of its legal problems, though, this would be a blow grassroots campaigns and the base of both parties.
If there were a national primary, the only states that would matter would be the bigger states, but only well-funded campaigns would be able to compete. Winning a small state wouldn't help at all like it can in the current system.
Update: I see that the ArkTimes blog has a post about this in which Max indicates that he's inclined to agree with the majority conclusion. Just a thought, as the world's biggest fan of the Clintons have you considered that Bill Clinton would be a hasbeen former governor if there had been a national primary in 1992?
