Huckabee's Brand of "Conservatism": Let the Gov't Grow the Economy

January, 2005 Huckabee:

"A college graduate will earn $1 million more in a lifetime than someone without a degree. Most of you know that we are tied with West Virginia for last place in the number of adults with a baccalaureate education. Do you realize that if we could increase just by 50 percent the number of adults who have a college degree, it would add $5 billion to the economy and it would result in a net income to the state of Arkansas of $340 million a year? For those of you who are saying how are we going to find money to pay for -- and you can fill in the blank of what we're going to pay for -- I'll tell you how we will find money. Get more kids in, through and out of college with a degree. The money for Arkansas' future is in the minds and the hearts of those kids that right now aren't finishing." Link.

This is an example of how liberals think of education. The liberal thinks: if only a child receives this opportunity, then the child will do better. In reality, those who get into college, in general, work harder than those who do not go to college. A college degree is an indicator that someone works harder. But college doesn't cause that person to learn to work harder. Self discipline was learned a long time ago. The added economic success of a college degree is not attributable to the college degree, but rather self-discipline. For the most part, a college degree does not matter in the real world.

Huckabee believes pushing lazy kids through college will make them more economically successful. He does not see that there is a difference between people who go to college and people who do not. And it is this difference which causes the difference in outcomes. Why let Huckabee spend taxpayer money betting on slackers?
