Character is Still the Issue for Mike Huckabee
Mike Huckabee's first book was called Character is the Issue. The irony of that title is striking, this from a man who claims to be the "Christian Leader" in the Republican field. There's no denying that he makes a big show of his faith, but when it comes time to put his money where his mouth is he doesn't walk the talk.
Over the course of the campaign I, and many others, have documented a remarkable pattern of intentional deception, lying repeatedly about his liberal record. Last week, he made a big show about how noble he is, by claiming that he refused to resort to "negative" campaigning, also known as looking at a candidate's record. He then proceeded to show his own "negative" commercial, in the now-successful hopes of getting it played for free. He never demanded that it be removed from the air and has, in fact, continued to repeat the charges in it, as have members of his campaign, who have continued to engage in other negative attacks.
This came to a head with the debate Sunday night, in which Mitt Romney pointed out that Huck's campaign chairman Ed Rollins had threatened to knock his teeth out. Huck has since disavowed this comment, as if he had no idea that anyone associated with his campaign was engaged in a practice he supposedly had sworn off. Huckabee is either lying again, or he is remarkably under-informed.
For Mike Huckabee character is the issue, his lack of it and his use of it as a campaign slogan, nonetheless.
Here's a link to an interesting story about Huck's Meltdown.
