FLIP...FLOP---Huckabee and the Smoking Ban---It's All Smoke and Mirrors
How can you trust this guy?
Here in Arkansas people cannot smoke on private property, thanks to Mike Huckabee. He pushed a law, based on phoney science, to ban smoking cigarettes, cigars, and pipes, all legal products, in private businesses that allow patrons under the age of 21. He has claimed that his is a conservative position because taxpayers supposedly have to pay for the health care of 2nd hand smoking "victims". Despite the fact that the study cited was not based on science, many legislators were scared into supporting Huck's nanny state bill.
Now, Huckabee supposedly doesn't support a federal ban. In a statement to The Hill, "Huckabee said that if Congress presented him with legislation banning smoking in public places, he would sign it, because he would not oppose the overwhelming public support that such a congressional vote would reflect. However, since such sentiment for federal legislation doesn’t exist at this time, and since he has said that the responsibility for regulating smoking initially lies with the states, the governor believes that this issue is best addressed at the local and state levels.”
This is surreal. Huckabee complains that Mitt Romney flip flopped on some issues, as if he hasn't. Now he's flip flopping, sort of, on this. I say sort of because he's just showing that he doesn't have a spine. He still supports a nationwide ban on smoking, which was clear in the video above. It's also clear that he wasn't saying that he'd only support it if and only if there was popular support. Even if there was, why would that make it okay.
Just like his Meltdown when he supposedly swore of "negative" campaigning by showing a "negative" ad, Huckabee is trying to get credit for not supporting a ban when he still does support it.
This is just one more example of Huckabee's duplicity.

Columbia, SC - Today, the following businessmen from Arkansas released a statement in support of former Arkansas Governor, Mike Huckabee: Scott T. Ford, President and CEO, Alltel Corporation; Warren A. Stephens, President and CEO, Stephens Inc.; Madison Murphy, Former Chairman, Murphy Oil Corporation; John Tyson, Chairman of the Board, Tyson Foods, Inc; and French Hill, Chairman and CEO, Delta Trust and Banking Corporation:
"We are a traditionally bi-partisan group of executives of several of the largest corporations headquartered in the State of Arkansas, each with considerable exposure to the Administration of Governor Mike Huckabee. Of late, Governor Huckabee has attracted what we believe to be unwarranted criticism regarding his business record."
"Our experience with Governor Huckabee indicates that he not only values greatly the freedoms of religion and liberty, but of the free market as well. He is an atypical leader who garnered the respect of not only the professional business community but of the working men and women across our State as well."
"When he became our Governor, he inherited our long sub-standard education system, infrastructure, and regulatory climate. Under his leadership, we were able to grow our businesses, increase our employment, reduce our litigation exposure and enjoy, along with all of our fellow Arkansans, a healthier economy, improved schools, updated highways, and new healthcare delivery facilities."
"In our support of Governor Huckabee's truly conservative, small government business outlook and his pragmatic, yet compassionate style of governing, we invite you to look past the shallow rhetoric of yet another campaign season to see what we have experienced first hand - that with the right political leadership in place, businesses and citizens can jointly prosper and as they do, they contribute so much more to the economic and societal fabric of a community than simply tax revenues."
Conservatives Betrayed
I like how these big executives who are backing a pro-illegal alien group are supporting Huckabee, too. It makes sense, since he protected them while he was governor from laws that would have hurt their access to a cheap labor supply.
Stay tuned, I'm about to do a write-up about this.
7:34 Oh my goodness! If that is all you have with which to attack Thompson's conservatism then he most certainly is the real deal. Meanwhile, we are writing books about Huckabee's history of betraying conservatives.
He was for the smoking ban before he was against it.
He was for ending "anchor babies" before he was against it.
He was for cutting tax cuts before he was against it.
He was for open borders before he was against it.
He was both for and against the Surge before he was definitely for it before Mitt was....after Mitt was already for it.
11:13 and 11:56, excellent comments.
