"Newt Is Dead To Me"
A friend said that to me recently. I have to agree. It wasn't a year ago that Newt was my great hope. I spent a lot of time refamiliarizing myself with him. I didn't like what I found. It came to the fore this week when he tangled with the real leader of the Conservative Movement, Rush Limbaugh. BIG MISTAKE. Not just because he upset the wrong guy, but because he put his brand of "more effective" government conservatism up against Rush's real, smaller government conservatism. In the bright lights of Ronald Reagan's hand-selected heir Newt crumbled. Newt's ego and anger were perceptible. Newt demonstrated that he thinks it's the government's role to fix problems that don't exist and to fix problems that aren't the business of government. Newt suggested that we give tax incentives to companies that reduce carbon emissions, illustrating not only that he doesn't listen to Rush Limbaugh but that he doesn't know that global warming is a hoax designed to control people and raise taxes. Apparently, Newt is unaware of the fact that the much bally-hooed ice core samples do not prove that climate is driven by carbon, but that the opposite is true, with an average of a 600 year lag time between temperature rises and carbon rises.
Rush pounced on this and gave a passionate and eloquent lecture. He demonstrated who was the Jedi master and who was the Sith lord. I know that's a bad and corny analogy, but it's true. Newt's ego is the size of an imperial cruiser, maybe even the Death Star. After all, he's an intellectual. He's a college professor. But Rush ran rings around him. In Star Wars terms, which I should stop using, btw, Rush did the Kessel Run in 12 parceks around Newt.
Newt exposed himself as something other than a real conservative. For his own sake, he shouldn't have come on with Rush. It was clear that he thought he'd charm or outsmart Rush. It blew up in his face and exposed his true nature to the largest audience of conservatives that exists.
With that said, I came across this interesting column from David Sanders, which must have been written without the benefit of hearing Rush and Newt clash. It is, however, very insightful about Newt's designs on the White House. Unfortunately, for Newt, and fortunately, for us, he exposed his true nature.
Here's the link to the confrontation between Rush and Newt.
