The following is a memo to legislators informing them about their new per diem pay. If a legislator spent a whole year in Hot Springs, they'd get paid an extra $53,655 per year. That doesn't count the rest of the pay they receive. Now, that's a worst case scenario, but consider how much these guys stand to make if we go to an annual legislative session.
Also, keep in mind that this is tax free money since it is a "reimbursement".
I have spoken with my sources who inform me that this does not include mileage, which they also get paid. I was also informed that per diem is still paid even if the legislator lives in subsidized housing on Capitol Hill.

SUBJECT: Per Diem Rate Changes Effective October 1, 2008
Pursuant to the guidelines promulgated by the U. S. General Services Administration (GSA), members of the General Assembly will be eligible to receive the per diem rates enumerated below as reimbursement for expenses associated with attending legislative committee meetings. The new rates become effective October 1, 2008 and do not apply to legislators who reside within fifty (50) miles of Little Rock and have signed a waiver agreement with their respective houses.
Little Rock $142
Hot Springs $147
Other Cities $109
Our past practices have been to adopt federal maximums when promulgated. At this writing, the mileage reimbursement rate of 58.5 cents per mile is scheduled to remain the same.
